Santa Fe National Historic Trail (Part 3)

Ethyl the Whale

Ethyl the Whale is a blue whale sculpture by Yustina Salnikova and Joel Dean Stockdill at Santa Fe Community College that measures 82 feet long and holds the Guinness World Record for largest recycled plastic sculpture. It was created to increase awareness about the negative impacts of plastics on the environment and named for the polyethylene that forms its body. The sculpture was displayed at Monterey Bay Aquarium until it was purchased by Meow Wolf and transported to Santa Fe on April 22nd (Earth Day) in 2019.

Fort Marcy Park

The Burning of Zozobra is a New Mexico tradition held annually at Fort Marcy Park on the Friday before Labor Day ahead of the annual Fiesta de Santa Fe.

Zozobra

“Zozobra” is a Spanish term for anguish, anxiety, or gloom, and the ritual centers on burning a 50-foot wooden marionette representing "Old Man Gloom" to dispel the hardships of the past year. Leading up to the event, Zozobra is filled with "glooms" submitted by the public, which traditionally come in the form of anything that a person may want to put behind them such as obsolete police reports, paid-off mortgages, divorce papers, or even just bad feelings written on a slip of paper.

Burning of Zozobra

Children dressed in white represent "glooms" who dance beneath Zozobra.

Burning of Zozobra

A fire spirit dancer dressed in red leads the event and also dances around Zozobra. Her role is to scare away the small “glooms” as she represents the light that sends away the bad energy of the year. After her dance is completed, the fireworks attached to Zozobra are lit and the effigy is burned.

Burning of Zozobra

The first Burning of Zozobra was conducted in 1924 by artist William Howard Shuster, Jr. for a group of friends and fellow artists known as Los Cinco Pintores, or “The Five Painters.” He adapted the practice from the Holy Week traditions of the Yaqui indigenous peoples of Arizona and Mexico who would lead a donkey carrying an effigy of Judas through the village before setting it on fire. Shuster and his friend E. Dana Johnson came up with the name Zozobra.

Burning of Zozobra

The first Zozobra was only six feet tall but the effigy created two years later for the first public Burning of Zozobra measured 20 feet tall. Over the years, the size of the effigy continued to grow until reaching its current height of 50 feet. Shuster directed the construction of Zozobra until 1964 after which point the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe was entrusted with the responsibility. The Burning of Zozobra, which started 62 years before the more well-known Burning Man, is now part of the F
